Sophia Fund Indigenous Bursaries 2022 Application Update

Sophia Fund Indigenous Bursaries is now open for applications from suitably qualified students. It is a fully funded scholarship for all students sponsored by the Flinders University.

About the University

Flinders University is a public university in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1966, it was named in honour of navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early 19th century.

A generous donation from the Sophia Fund, has enabled the establishment of the Sophia Fund Indigenous Bursaries. They have been established to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to undertake a higher education course.

Benefits of Sophia Fund Indigenous Bursaries

Subject to the availability of funds, two bursaries will be awarded annually and will be valued at $500 each.

These bursaries will be awarded to students in their first year of higher education study. Payment will be made during the first semester.

Requirements for Sophia Fund Indigenous Bursaries 

Applicants for these bursaries must:

1. Be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

2. Identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

3. Be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by the community in which he or she lives or has lived; and

4. Be in their first year of higher education study and

5. Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate course of study at Flinders University.

Selection Process

These bursaries will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic potential. The academic potential of applicants will be assessed by way of the Selection Score used to gain entry to their course of study e.g. TER, STAT score.

Selection will be made in accordance with procedures approved by the Director, Academic and Student Services, and will be carried out in collaboration with the staff of Yunggorendi, First Nations Centre for Higher Education and Research.
