Stanford Scholarships: Stanford University is considered to be one of the best universities in the world in offering scholarships to international students.

It is located in Stanford, California, which is located near Silicon Valley. This university was founded in 1885 by the Stanford’s to commemorate their only child who died of a fever.

Stanford University offers scholarships for undergraduate students. The two types of Stanford University scholarships for undergraduate students are athletic scholarships and need-based scholarships.

The maximum amount is fully-funded which means that they will cover tuition, room, and board for you to attend Stanford University.

Types of Funding

• Grants, Scholarships, Fellowships- These are awarded by the school for student’s use. These awards do not have to be repaid by the student.
• Loans- Students can take out a loan from the government of their origin or from organizations such as banks. These have to be repaid by the student.
• Work Study- Students can work as teaching assistants, research assistants, residence assistants, or any jobs that Stanford University needs to be fulfilled.

1. Knight Hennessy Scholarships 2021

Knight Hennessy Scholarships provides full funding to 100 graduate students annually to study in any graduate schools at Stanford University. This fellowship is the largest endowed fellowship in the world with its endowment totaling $750 million.

Its goal is to produce the world’s global leaders who will impact the world. International students are welcome to apply because of its goal to produce the world’s global leaders who will impact the world.

Scholarship Worth:

The Knight Hennessy Scholarships covers for the students and applicants Tuition and Fees, Room and Board, Books, Supplies Instruction Materials, Health Insurance, Transportation, Personal Expenses

2. Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarship is Open to undergraduates

Eligibility Requirements: 

• Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program in the U. S. accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Remain matriculated in the undergraduate program for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
• Applying to participate in a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.
• Planning to use the scholarship for study abroad. Boren Scholarships are NOT for study in the U.S

3. Freeman-ASIA Awards

The  Freeman-Asia Award is opened to Undergraduate students

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures

Eligibility Requirements: 

Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application.

Must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in the proposed study abroad program.

The applicant is required to submit the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) figure, calculated through FAFSA, with the statement of financial need through the online Freeman-ASIA application.

Must be an undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 2.8, pursuing his or her first bachelor’s degree (or associate’s degree)

Must apply through the U.S. home campus and have at least one term of enrollment remaining at the home institution in the U.S. upon returning from studying abroad in Asia

Must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.

Must have little or no previous experience in the country in which he or she plans to study

Application Process: 

Applications must be submitted and reviewed by the campus study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor.  The proposed length of study in the host country must be a minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term and 12 weeks for a semester term.

As part of the application, applicants propose a service project as to how they plan to share their overseas study abroad experiences and promote interest in study abroad in East and Southeast Asia on their college campuses and/or in their communities.

4. Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship:

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Open to Graduate students

The Overseas Resource Center and the Office of Graduate Financial Aid have primary responsibility for the administration of the Fulbright-Hays DDRA. DDRA Grants have an involved campus process and require a Stanford endorsement.

Eligibility Requirements: 

• Citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S.
• Advanced to Ph.D. candidacy prior to departure.
• Modern foreign languages and non-western area studies.
• Plans for a teaching career in the U.S. upon graduation.
• Adequate skills in the foreign language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation research project.
• May apply to a western European country, but must research non-western studies at an institute which specializes in such studies.

Application Process: 

Therefore, you need to be aware of two deadlines: a campus deadline and a national deadline. The campus deadline is in winter/spring and the national deadline usually follows about a week later. The application process is lengthy and requires many months of preparation.

The student’s application must be submitted through the appropriate channels at his/her university and transmitted to the U.S. Department of Education (EsD) by the university’s Project Director.

The Fulbright-Hays DDRA competition is usually announced in late January/early February. The Campus Deadline will be confirmed once the National Deadline is set.
