Vanier Canada Scholarship, which is fully funded by the Government of Canada is presently accepting applications from eligible students.

The Vanier Canada Scholarship

In 2008, the Government of Canada introduced the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program with the aim of enhancing Canada’s capacity to attract and retain exceptional doctoral students, thereby positioning the country as a prominent hub for research and advanced education.

Vanier Scholars exhibit outstanding leadership abilities and attain a remarkable level of academic excellence in their graduate studies across disciplines such as social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health.

Benefits of Vanier Canada Scholarship

Each scholar will receive an annual grant of $50,000 for a duration of three years.

Applicants have the opportunity to pursue their Ph.D. studies at their preferred Canadian institutions.

The funding for the applicant’s studies will be fully or partially provided, depending on their academic accomplishments, research proposal, and leadership capabilities.

Eligibility Criteria of Vanier Canada Scholarship

1. The applicant must be a student studying in Canada, either Canadian or foreign.

2. The applicant must be enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. program at a Canadian institution.

3. The candidate must be nominated by a university that has been allocated Vanier CGS slots (the list will be updated on July 1).

4. The applicant must be enrolled in their inaugural Ph.D. program.

5. The applicant must not be receiving a fellowship or scholarship from any of the three Canadian agencies (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC) for any other doctoral program.

6. The candidate must have achieved a first-class average in their studies over the last two years.

7. Students in joint professional degree programs (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are eligible, but only funding for the Ph.D. portion will be provided.

8. The research proposal of the candidate must have a significant research component.

9. The applicant must not be a faculty member at the institution with a Vanier quota or any other institution.

To be eligible, the applicant must have obtained leave from the institution to pursue the Ph.D. program.

10. The applicant must be registered as a student on a full-time basis. If the student has a disability or family responsibilities, they may be allowed to enroll as a part-time student.

11. For part-time students, two months of study will be considered equivalent to one month of study for a full-time student.

12. Canadian Federal Government employees can be eligible, provided they take an unpaid leave from the government.

13. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria are permitted to apply for both the Vanier scholarship and agency-specific Ph.D. scholarships.

However, if selected for multiple scholarships, they will need to choose one award after the selection process.

Required Documents for Vanier Canada Scholarship

To apply for the Vanier scholarships in Canada, candidates must have all the following documents in their possession:

1. An application form through ResearchNet.

2. Two letters of reference.

3. A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.

4. Concise research contributions, limited to one page.

5. A personal statement highlighting the candidate’s leadership qualities.

6. Two letters of reference focusing on the candidate’s leadership abilities.

7. A research proposal with a maximum length of two pages.

8. Project preferences outlined in a document of up to five pages.

9. Academic documentation, including transcripts and certificates.

10. Documentation of special circumstances, if applicable, for part-time students, not exceeding 0.5 pages.
