The Fulbright Scholarship for Nigerian Student

The primary aim of the program is to enhance the capabilities of African universities by providing advanced degree training and cultivating the potential of their academic personnel.

The program specifically caters to young and exceptionally talented faculty members who aspire to pursue their doctoral research in the United States.

Grant Benefit

The funding includes the recipient’s round-trip airfare to the United States, an allowance to aid in settling in, a monthly stipend, an allowance for housing, a books-and-supplies allowance, and a computer allowance.

The grant encompasses essential university health insurance as the primary coverage, along with the secondary coverage of the Fulbright ASPE health benefit.

Scholarship Worth

The financial support provided for the entire duration of the program includes:

1. Coverage of tuition fees.

2. Airfare expenses.

3. Stipend for living expenses.

4. Health insurance coverage.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to qualify for a grant, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Applicants must be Nigerian citizens or nationals, or hold a valid passport issued by the government of Nigeria as permanent residents.

2. Applicants must be enrolled in a Doctoral or PhD program at a Nigerian university and have completed a substantial portion of their studies, with endorsement from their home institution.

Please note that MASTERS and First-Degree applicants are not eligible for this program.

3. Applicants must possess an exceptional academic record and show a high level of proficiency in the English language.

4. Applicants must take their first TOEFL exam no later than May 2023.

5. Applicants must achieve the minimum required score on standardized tests, with a TOEFL score of 90.

6. Applicants should exhibit strong motivation and a sincere commitment to completing the program as scheduled and returning to their home country.

7. Shortlisting for interviews will be based on the strength of applicants’ research proposals, which should clearly outline research objectives, methodology, timeframe, and justification for conducting the research in the United States.

8. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied in the United States.

9. Applicants in the fields of business, law, and accounting should know research students in these areas face challenges in securing placements because of the high demand for full-time programs and concerns regarding tuition.

However, proposals focused on economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution may enhance the chances of finding suitable placements for such grantees.
