– TASUED Admission List –

This is to inform all expecting applicants that the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) list of successfully admitted students for the 2020/2021 academic session is out and has been released by the school management.

About Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED)

They named the Tai Solarin University of Education after the Nigerian educational administrator and human rights activist Tai Solarin (1922–1994).

It is the 76th approved university in Nigeria.

The Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED, pronounced TARSUD), was proclaimed a full-fledged university (and a transformation of the erstwhile Tai Solarin College of Education, established January 1978), on 29 January 2005 by the administration of His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

NUC Approval

They officially approved TASUED as a university by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Tuesday 28 November 2005.

It is a citadel of learning dedicated to the production of competent professional educators and teachers who have immense knowledge of their chosen subjects/disciplines of study and the requisite pedagogical skills of subject delivery.

Governor Amosun’s Regime

Sequel to the NUC Resource Assessment exercise in April 2019, the Commission besides the existing programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) granted the university the approval to establish some postgraduate programmes and the full-time mode of some undergraduate programmes.

59 programmes were newly approved: 33 PhD programmes, 13 M.A, M.Sc, M.A(Ed) and M.Sc(Ed) programmes and 13 B.A and B.Sc programmes.

The #OccupyTASUED Campaign

A new government came to power in Ogun State in 2011 led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun and attempted to scrap TASUED.

Students of the institution rose against the decision and formed the #OccupyTASUED campaign.

On February 14, 2012, on one of their trips to the statehouse in Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, the bus conveying TASUED supporters got its tyre punctured and rolled over twice.

The Aftermath

The accident inflicted injuries on many and eventually caused the death of Olatunji Fashina aka Humble TeeJay.

Layemi, Azeez Agboola (Olofin), Ishola Adebayo Crown, Owoblow, Tola Ben, and a few others were also on the bus that was involved in the accident.

Today, Tunji Fashina is being honoured as a hero of the successful struggle ’cause he paid an enormous price with his life.

The Students Union Govt (SUG) building got named after him.

What you Need to Know About Tai Solarin

Tai Solarin is one of the post-Independence civil rights critics and activists in his native Nigeria; some others were Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (musician) Beko Ransome-KutiWole Soyinka (Nobel Laureate), Ayodele Awojobi, Dele Giwa, Gani Fawehinmi (lawyer), and Ken Saro-Wiwa.

For most of the first forty years after independence, Nigeria had no effective opposition to the most military government of the day.

These activists acted as an effective opposition to the ruling government.

“The Beginning of the End”

In 1975, when the General Gowon Regime delayed returning power to a civilian regime, Tai published his “The Beginning of the End” statement, which he then physically distributed on the roadside.

They subsequently imprisoned him for this act. Throughout his lifetime Tai fought running battles with various governments to improve a lot of Nigerians.

Political Critiques

Mr. Solarin was an intellectual guru for Nigeria’s disenchanted and disfranchised for four decades.

His writings in magazines and newspapers, highlighting what he called the hypocrisy and vulgarity of the Nigeria of his day, frequently angered people in power.

He was a vehement critic of military rule in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, and an ombudsman in three states in 1976 and 1977.

As a columnist, Tai was a relentless critic of Nigerian military rule, as well as of corruption in the government and the church. They often jailed him for his public remarks.

Tai Solarin’s Early Life

Solarin was born in Ikenne, Ogun State, in Western Nigeria on August 20, 1922, the first child in a set of twins. His twin sister, Kehinde Solarin died in 1991 at about 69 years.

He attended Wesley College Ibadan. The writings of Nnamdi Azikiwe who encouraged young people to travel abroad to study inspired Solarin.

His initial attempt to gain a passport fell through but he later enlisted in the British Air Force and served with the Royal Air Force as a navigator in the Second World War.

He remained in Britain, studying at the University of Manchester, and then at the University of London. Tai Solarin married English-born Sheila Mary Tuer in 1951.

Return to Nigeria

Solarin returned to Nigeria and became a tutor at Molusi College, which was supported by the community and Christians in Ijebu-Igbo.

In 1952, he was appointed the school’s principal succeeding Stephen Awokoya who had just been appointed the Regional Minister for Education.

Solarin, a humanist had a mission to ‘re-educate’ the community and made some changes.

He removed morning prayers and religious studies as a subject in the school.

Later on, e quit and found his own school with the approval of Awokoya the former Principal. He established Mayflower School on January 27, 1956.
