1. Average Tuition Cost for a Semester in Spain
Due to the nature of third-party providers, costs are going to be higher. Averaging around $11,000 for a semester in Spain, these programs support you throughout the process which can make the experience much less daunting.

3. Average Airfare & Travel Costs While in Spain
Flying into a major airport hub like Madrid or Barcelona and traveling onward by bus or train to your university will likely cut more costs than flying into a smaller regional airport.
That said, you can expect to spend between $600-$1,000 on a round-trip flight. Skyscanner is a good place to start when looking for airfare.
Once in Spain, national buses are quite cheap and deals can be found for trains. BlaBlaCar, a cheap carpooling service, is another way to get around.
If studying in Madrid and under the age of 26, you are entitled to the student abono card which gets you seriously discounted travel. For around $23 a month, you get unlimited rides on Madrid metro and city buses.
For some programs, students may need to apply for a visa or register upon arrival. Costs for processing individual visas and registration range from $50 to $500, depending on the country and on the citizenship of the student.
5. Eligibility Requirements for Study Abroad in Barcelona
- 18 years of age
- In good standing at your home school
- 2.75 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale (GPAs under 2.75 will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
- Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when the program begins. Some courses at local universities may not be open to sophomores.
- No previous Spanish language courses are required
4. Barcelona Study Abroad Application Requirements
- Online Application
Applications may be considered after the published deadline on a space-available basis. Please note that late applicants may be required to submit a non-refundable confirmation deposit upon acceptance in order to secure a place in the program.
Submit the following in your MyIESabroad account after your Online Application is processed:
- Home School Authorization
Your on-campus study abroad advisor can either complete the Home School Authorization electronically through IES Abroad’s PartnerPortal system or by filling out the PDF form linked above. Consult your study abroad advisor to determine how they would prefer to complete your Home School Authorization. - Official Transcript(s) for each college/university you have attended since high school. If you have multiple transcripts, IES Abroad will average the GPAs for all colleges/universities you have attended and use that cumulative GPA when reviewing your application.
- Students attending higher education institutions outside of the U.S. may need to submit English language proficiency exam results. Contact your IES Abroad Representative for more information.
Additional Requirements for Applying
- Professor Recommendation Letter
Although there is no length requirement, the recommendation must indicate a professor’s opinion of the applicant’s academic ability to pursue university-level coursework in a foreign country, in addition to any information that would help IES Abroad gain a better understanding of the applicant. - Personal Academic Essay
Although there is no length requirement, the essay must address your GPA, any particular academic challenges faced, reasons you chose this IES Abroad program, and how it fits into your academic career.
5. Visa and Passport Requirements
A passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of the program, with at least two blank pages is required. Make sure to visit travel.state.gov to locate U.S. passport agencies in your area.
