– Self-defense –

Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm. It is simply protecting oneself from vices.

Using self-defence is a right and has legal justification. And the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions.

Self-defence can be physical, with the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of violence. It could either be armed or unarmed depending on the threat encountered.

In either case, the chances of success depend on various parameters, related to the severity of the threat on one hand, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender.

So it is very important to get yourself prepared to defend yourself if you cannot afford to pay bodyguards who will accompany you everywhere to make sure you’re safe.

Before we get into the defence techniques you should harness, it is important that you understand this;

Prevention Is Better than Self-Defense

Never forget that prevention is better than self-defence. Attackers are looking for unsuspecting, vulnerable targets.

So always follow general safety tips like being aware of your surroundings, only walking and parking in well-lit areas, keeping your keys in hand as you approach your door or car, varying your route and times of travel, and other personal security precautions.

Apart from avoiding physical confrontation, if you can talk someone out of physically assaulting you or walk away.

If you won’t lose much by handing over your wallet/purse or whatever they want to them, do that. Hand over your money rather than fight. Nothing you own is worth more than your life or health.

Self-Defence Techniques

We should only consider self Defence when violence is unavoidable. Having ironed that out, let’s talk about the techniques that will enable you to fight back effectively.

It’s even effective against someone bigger or stronger than you. Here are some basic self-defense techniques that can keep you safe.

1. Groin Area Attack

If the attacker is male this is the perfect place to attack. Hitting this area will have the attacker paralyzed and in immense pain, granting you a peaceful escape.

2. Palm-Heel Strike

Palm-Heel Strike

Aim for the attacker’s nasal bones if you can’t reach him. To use this technique, straighten your arm with your palm and bend your hand back, curl up your fingers to protect them. Hit the nose or chin upwards by using your body weight.

3. Elbow Blow

Elbow Blow

Hitting the attacker with your elbow will do more damage. When someone grabs you from behind, point one elbow towards the ground, raise the other elbow and hit the attacker.

When someone grabs you from front, raise your elbow to hit the attacker on his/her chin.

4. Back Choking

Back Choking

Use one of your hands on the attacker’s throat area and push him/her hard. Try to use your other hand to free your neck from the hold. Make sure that you press hard on the attacker’s throat and push him with full force.

5. Bear Hug

Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand self-defence system of the Israel Defense Force, with techniques to defend against realistic grabs and holds.

A Krav Maga defence for when someone holds you from behind: Drop your weight and try to hit his head with your elbows or stomp his feet with your feet.

If that doesn’t work, pull his fingers back to force him to release you, rotate out of his hold, and attack him with your knees/kicks. (Pulling fingers is also an effective move in a chokehold sometimes).

6. Mount Position

Mount Position

When the attacker has you pinned on the floor, you can pivot to be on top with this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu technique.

Hook onto his wrist with one hand and use your other hand to grab behind his elbow, trapping his arm to your chest.

Then use your foot to trap his foot and leg, lift your hips and turn over onto your knees to get on top.
