In 1953, All American Airways changed its name to Allegheny Airlines. In the following two decades, Allegheny Airlines expanded progressively, adding the Douglas DC-9 jet to its fleet in 1966.

Also, acquiring Lake Central Airlines in 1968 and Mohawk Airlines, in 1972. In 1979, Allegheny Airlines changed its name to USAir, later gaining San Diego-based PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines) (1987).

Nigeria Airways Overview

More commonly known as Nigeria Airways, was a Nigerian airline. They found the company in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation (WAAC).

It held the name WAAC Nigeria until 1971, when it was rebranded to the name it had until it ceased operations in 2003.

The government of Nigeria owned a majority of the airline (51%) until 1961 when it boosted its participation in the company to 100% and made it the country’s flag carrier.

At the time of dissolution, the airline’s headquarters were at Airways House in Abuja.

Additional Information

They concentrated operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and served both domestic and international destinations mainly concentrated in West Africa. The network also had points in Europe, North America and Saudi Arabia.

Several foreign companies managed the airline, including British Airways, the Dutch company KLM and South African Airways.

Nigeria Airways had its heyday in the early 1980s, just before the departure of a KLM team that had been hired to make the airline efficient and profitable.

More Details

Its fleet comprised about 30 aircraft, but the carrier was two years behind with its accounts if aircraft were acquired for cash.

Plagued by mismanagement, corruption, and over-staffing, at the time of closure the airline had debts totaling US$528,000,000 (equivalent to $719,123,010 in 2018).

A poor safety record and its operative fleet comprised a single aircraft flying domestic routes and two leased aircraft operating the international network.

Virgin Nigeria succeeded Nigeria Airways, and Arik Air took the ground facilities over.

Early Years of the Nigerian Airline

The airline came into being on 23 August 1958 under the name West African Airways Corporation Nigeria Limited (WAAC Nigeria).

This is also known as Nigeria Airways, to succeed the folded West African Airways Corporation (WAAC); the title “WAAC” was retained because of the prestige this company had previously earned.

Initially, the carrier was a tripartite entity in which the Nigerian government was the major shareholder (51%), and Elder Dempster Lines and BOAC held the balance (32⅔ and 16⅓, respectively).

Additional Information

WAAC Nigeria inherited some aircraft previously owned by WAAC. Operations started on 1 October 1958, with a BOAC Stratocruiser operated on behalf of the new airline linking London.

On the same day, WAAC Nigeria signed a 15-year agreement with BOAC to charter Stratocruisers and Britannia for serving long-haul flights between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The contract also contemplated that they would operate these routes in a pool agreement. Whereby tickets could be issued by one airline for flights operated by the other, with the revenues being shared.

More Details

They withdrew the entire Heron fleet from service in March 1961 as it proved economically inviable. Aimed at replacing the DC-3 fleet, they ordered the late five Fokker Friendship 200s that year.

A BOAC Comet 4 inaugurated the jet services between Nigeria and London on 1 April 1962. The flight was operated with Nigeria Airways.

The Friendships joined the fleet between January and May 1963 and were deployed on regional routes. This included those that served Abidjan, Accra, Bathurst, Dakar, Freetown, and Roberts field.

The number of carried passengers had fallen from 2,1 million in 1985 to just 10,000 in the first quarter of 2003, and it controlled just 6% and 1% of the domestic and the international markets, respectively.

The airline ceased operations in 2003 and was liquidated a year later. The Nigerian government later came to an agreement with Virgin Atlantic Airways to found Virgin Nigeria Airways, intended as a replacement.

Even though Virgin Nigeria succeeded Nigeria Airways, the ground facilities of the folded Nigeria Airways were eventually taken over by the then-startup carrier Arik Air

Additional Information

In 2004, a group of Nigerian investors and Virgin Atlantic Airways, owned by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson jointly create a new national carrier called Virgin Nigeria.

Sir Branson pulled out in 2010, citing what he said was interference by politicians and regulators.

This latest airline, which would have be called Nigeria Air, was launched with some fanfare at an international air show in the UK in July.

Nigeria Air was due to start commercial flights in December. A promotional video for the operator gushed now is the time to bring Nigeria even closer to the world.

When booking international flights, to avoid disappointment, it’s best to book flights even earlier, up to 6 months in advance. Airlines also lower the flight prices during months where destinations see a lower volume of visitors.
However, if you’re more flexible in your travel, you can secure discounted flight prices at the last minute if the airlines have not filled up their flights.

Best Time to Schedule Your Flights

It is believed that the best time to book flights is in the morning. Opt for flights that depart in the morning as this is the time of day that attracts the best deals among the airlines.
Also, the first flight of the day is usually one of the cheapest flights of the day. The next most affordable time to fly is during or after lunch.
On weekends, flights scheduled to depart on a Saturday afternoon or evening are relatively cheaper than other flight tickets.

Best Day to Book Flights

It has been said that the best time to book cheap flights is on a Tuesday, as this is the day that airlines launch airfare sales which end on a Thursday.
To secure the cheapest domestic flights at affordable prices, it is advisable to not book flights that depart on Friday and Sunday, as these in-demand flights are often expensive.
Flights are least full on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, so you can expect airfares to be relatively lower and you have the added advantage of escaping the busyness of the crowd at the airport.
