The cost difference between aid packages graphs upward. Across all 1,244 colleges, the average annual tuition and fees were $24,042. The average for the top 50 schools was $49,702.

These top 50 schools are all private colleges or universities. 

Furthermore, all Ivy League schools were represented on the list, with Columbia University leading the pack with aid packages averaging $55,521.

Gift aid, such as grants and scholarships, as well as federal and private student loans, are also included.

For each school, we also include the following statistics:

• The proportion of students for whom the college meets their entire financial need.

It estimates that the average need-based scholarship will be $49,575 for the 2017-2018 school year.
