The National Business and Technical Examinations Board were founded in 1992 to domesticate craft level examinations previously conducted by City & Guilds, Pittman’s, and the Royal Society of Arts throughout the United Kingdom in conformity with the principles of the National Policy on Education.

The management of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) is yet to release the 2022 November/December NBC/NTC and ANBC/ANTC examinations results.

Candidates who intend to take part in the 2022 NABTEB GCE can learn how to check their results online.

NABTEB is one of the examination bodies set up by the Federal Government in 1992 to reduce the burden of conducting examinations, which involves a lot of technical and trade-related practicals.

The board conducts the National Technical Examination (NTC), National Business Certificate (NBC) and their respective advance level examinations (ANBC and ANTC).

NABTEB General Wood Work Questions

Question 1

(a) Name two methods of carving wood.

(b) List four factors to consider when planning the construction of a designed project.

(c) List four ways by which a woodwork entrepreneur would promote the sale of products.

Question 2

(a) State two safety precautions to be observed when using a grinding stone.

(b) (i) List two types of machine saws

(ii) List two types of portable power saws

(c) List two tools that are used to remove nails from a workpiece.

Question 3

(a) List two types of paint that are used in finishing a cabinet.

(b) State one characteristic of a seasoned timber

(c) Make an exploded pictorial sketch of the dovetail tee-halving joint.


Two sheets of drawing paper, 550 x 375 mm are provided.

Use one sheet of drawing papers to answer question 5 and the other sheet to answer question 6.

All dimensions are in millimetres. You should work to the main dimensions but where no dimensions are given, use your own discretion.

Marks will be awarded for draughtsmanship.

Answer all the questions.

A coffee table is to be designed to the following specification:

length – 750;

width – 450;

height – 400.

(all dimensions are in millimetres)

The coffee table has a shelf halfway down the top.  Equally, the top and the shelf are each to be made from 12 mm plywood. The underframe is to be constructed from 30 mm hardwood.

(5) Make two preliminary freehand pictorial sketches, each for a different design of the coffee table.

(6) Select one sketch in question 1 and show the sketch selected with a tick (√)

On a scale of 1:5, draw in the Third Orthographic Projection the following views of the selected sketch:

(a) front elevation;

(b) plan with the top removed.
