The cost of studying in Hungary is not as high as people would always think. Education in Hungary is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16.
The child may have had the benefit of a kindergarten (óvoda) experience prior to school entry but formally begins school (általános iskola) at 6 and remains in that school until 14.
At 14 the child will attend a secondary school, either a grammar school devoted primarily to academic studies (gimnázium) or a vocational school (szakközépiskola). While the pupil is permitted to leave school at 16, most continue to 18 years of age.
Further study in institutes of higher education is by competitive entry and less than one-fifth of all students go on to colleges and universities.
Cost of Tuition Fee in Hungary
All degrees, are awarded ECTS credits. Universities in Hungary follow the Bologna three-tier system: Bachelor (three years), Master (one to two years), Doctorate (three to four years).
To gain admission to a university or college course in Hungary, students must meet certain entry requirements. These consist mainly of a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree (for a master’s program), proof of language proficiency, and an entrance exam.
Both your diploma and transcripts of your previous studies should be translated into Hungarian or English, depending on what language the program is delivered in.

Transportation Fee in Hungary
Hungary has an efficient network of public transport including buses in all cities, trolleybuses and trams in bigger cities, metro services plus suburban railway lines called HÉV lines, and boat services in Budapest.
Passes are available for various lengths of time ( monthly) and are valid for each form of transport. Tickets that can be used on any form of transport are available at stations or street kiosks.
Single tickets are valid for a single journey without transfer on the whole length of a line, but multiple tickets are needed when your journey involves changes.
If you regularly use public transport, it is economically more viable to buy a monthly or yearly pass. Students with valid student cards are entitled to reduced rates. Monthly student transportation pass: 30 EUR
Cost of Living in Hungary
The living cost of a student in Hungary varies in different cities. For example, if you want to live in Budapest, your budget should be higher than other cities. Budapest is the best city for international students and also the most expensive.
A student should have a budget of at least 520 Euros per month to cover the accommodation, utilities, local transport, and for an outing.
The living budget of students in other cities of Hungary is low compared to Budapest city. To live in any other city in Hungary, you will need a minimum of 300 Euros per month.
You should contact the university administration about accommodation on their website after your application is accepted. It is one of their jobs to guide international students in every possible way.
Universities also offer On-Campus residence and if there is no place left for you, they can also help you get a private residence in one room. Each student has to pay around 200 EUR per month.
You should first apply for accommodation on campus. Students are given every facility there including laundry, internet, and a TV room. Usually 2 – 3 students’ residence.
Hungary Visa Cost
All foreign students, who are not citizens of the EU, and are planning to study in Hungary and to reside within its borders for more than 90 days, are required to apply for a long-term Student Visa in order to study in Hungary.
This varies, so inquire in advance about the entry regulations that apply to your country! You can only apply for your visa from the Hungarian Consulate or Embassy that has jurisdiction in your state or country of permanent residence, before your departure.
The processing of visas will take around one month. In order to receive a student visa, you must first have an offer from a Hungarian university.
Cost of Medical Insurance in Hungary
When preparing to study in a foreign country, international students must familiarize themselves with the health care and insurance system of their host country.
This way, the student will be prepared should the unexpected happen and they become ill or injured during their studies.
Hungary provides publicly funded health insurance, meaning that health insurance is free for all its citizens. Its health insurance coverage extends to include those non-Hungarian citizens who are insured under the National Health Insurance Fund (Országos Egészségpénztár Penztar – OEP).
In order to receive a student visa, one of the requirements that must be fulfilled is obtaining valid health insurance.
A valid health insurance plan means that you have an insurance policy that will cover at least 30,000 EUR of medical costs including emergency health services and transport home in the event of a medical emergency, and it must be applicable for the full duration of your time abroad.
