– Social Work Interview Questions –

During an interview for a social worker role whether the job is in a clinic, school, or elsewhere, you can expect that you’ll be asked about your skills and experience, your specific knowledge of social work theories or modalities, and how you’d handle specific situations that might come up.

Social Work Interview Questions and Answers Series 2021

Social work employers evaluate how you interact in an interview just as much as they evaluate what you have to say.

Practice interviewing with career counselors and advisors to refine your approach and get some feedback.

Interviewers will probably ask you to reflect on your clinical or casework experience and your clinical philosophy and approach.

These interview questions and answer guidelines will help you plan your own good interview answers.

They’ll also likely ask questions about your most challenging cases and how you handled them. Be prepared to answer all these kinds of questions.

1. What is your Biggest Weakness?

2. What Made you go into Social Work?

3. How do you Balance Your Work and Personal Life?

4. Would you be Prepared to Make Home Visits?

5. How do you Manage Constant Shifting at Work?

6. Tell me About Yourself

7. Why Should We Hire you for this Position?

8. What do you Know About our Organization?

Social workers are unsung heroes. When people are struggling, social workers spring into action.

They deftly cut through red tape using the power of their knowledge, and they forge connections between people in need and supportive services that can help them thrive.

RECOMMENDED

1. What do you Know About our Organization?

This is another commonly asked question. Here, the interviewer wants to know that you have done your research on their company prior to the interview.

You don’t have to know the organization inside out, but you should always make sure that you have a good idea of the services they offer, when they started, how successful they are, any recent awards they have been nominated for, and their company values.

2. What Made you go into Social Work?

Employers want to hear more than just ‘I have a desire to help others. Refrain from saying it’s because you graduated in this field.

Instead, reveal your commitment to the job and how much you believe social work is essential to society. Perhaps bring up a personal story and explain what led you to choose this profession.

3. How do you Balance Your Work and Personal Life?

Balancing between work and your personal life as a social worker can be tough. It’s difficult to not bring the case home or get that phone call from a client during your Sunday roast.

The goal of this difficult question (which will most certainly arise) is to see if you can handle work interfering with your personal life, or perhaps to detect whether you’ll be willing to do some overtime.

4. Would you be Prepared to Make Home Visits?

Visiting clients in their homes is a critical part of a social worker’s role. This can sometimes be a risky or emotionally challenging situation, and the interviewer will want to see if you’re prepared for it.

Answering this question with a ‘yes’ is obviously the right way to go, but make sure to also express confidence.

5. How do you Manage Constant Shifting at Work?

The employer is looking for evidence of your organizational skills. Discuss how you prioritize tasks and how you are able to quickly adapt to changing demands.

Provide an example of how you have had to adjust priorities quickly to meet new responsibilities and needs.

6. Tell me About Yourself

This is a commonly used icebreaker, which helps to build up an initial rapport between you and the interviewer. It gives you the opportunity to talk about yourself, your interests, and your background.

The key to answering this question is to structure your response in a clear and concise manner. Start with your GCSEs or early qualifications, then include any key work experience.

7. Why Should We Hire you for this Position?

This one should come as no surprise as it’s one of the most common job interview questions asked. This is your chance to shine and really prove your experience and skills in social work.

You don’t want to respond with anything too cliché, but you should indeed highlight why you’ll be better than the next candidate.

8. What is Your Biggest Weakness?

Be very careful when answering this question. You need to show a level of personal awareness, and strength of character. The worst thing you can say here is, ‘I have none.

This will show a lack of sensitivity to the interviewer, and this could be particularly damning if you are applying for a role as a social worker. “social work interview questions”
