What is Nigerian Navy Really About?
The Nigeria Navy is a division of Nigerian Armed Forces. This force is part of the biggest forces in the African Continent which is made up of thousands of personnel plus those of the coast guard. The Nigerian Navy was formed from the Nigerian marine after the amalgamation of the southern and northern protectorate in 1914.
Then, their function was basically to be in charge of the ports and harbours, channel dredging, lighting and voyage. In 1959 July, the Nigerian Naval Force was changed and permitted to function as a naval force. As a result, Queen Elizabeth II allows the force to be called ” The Royal Nigerian Navy”. The name was finally changed to “The Nigerian Navy” which its called today after Nigeria becomes a republic state in 1963.
This aspect of the Armed forces is created to fill some vacuum in the Nation’s security and part of them include;
1. Defence Against Foreign Attacks:
It is quite obvious that the primary function of any nation’s Navy is to defend and ensure the safety of her country. In the same scenario, the main function of the Nigerian Navy is to protect the Nigerian country against any threat within its territory.
Nigeria is blessed with large bodies of water and this form her boundaries, of which pirates, militants can launch an attack through those water channels. The Nigeria Navy, therefore, protect the nation from such attacks. Based on this responsibility, the Navies generally are termed “the water Armies”.
2. Cost Guard Duties
Under the cost guard duties, the Nigerian Navy perform the following roles;
- Enforcement of regulations and laws concerning customs.
- Train other men what they need to know before joining the force.
3. Military Responsibility
They join forces with other military units form a larger force projection and ensure the balance of power.
