Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships, which is fully funded by Canon Collins Trust, is presently accepting applications from eligible students.

The Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships

Since 1981, the Canon Collins Trust has been administering scholarship programs for students hailing from countries in southern Africa.

Over the years, the Trust has provided support to more than 4,000 scholars from 14 different nations.

Currently, the Trust offers scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi.

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje, a notable figure in South African history, was a journalist, translator, writer, intellectual, linguist, and politician.

He played a pivotal role as a founding member and the first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which is now recognized as the African National Congress (ANC).

Plaatje’s legacy is honored through various institutions named after him, including the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Sol Plaatje University, Sol Plaatje Museum and Library, and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust.

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying, it is imperative that applicants meet the following minimum entry requirements. Please note that failure to meet all the criteria will result in your application being ineligible for consideration:

1. Applicants must hold South African, Namibian, or Zimbabwean citizenship, or have refugee status in one of these countries.

2. Applicants must be residents of South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe.

3. Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate first degree qualification or are expected to graduate in 2022 with a second class, upper division, or equivalent.

4. Applicants must be enrolled in or planning to pursue a Masters or PhD program in one of the aforementioned fields in 2023.

5. Applicants must be studying or planning to study on a full-time or part-time basis (distance learning may also be considered).

6. Applicants must be enrolled in or intending to enroll at a university in South Africa.

Documents Required

In order to complete your application, you will need to provide the following documents (please ensure that each copy is certified):

1. Proof of identification, such as an ID document, birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license.

2. If applicable, documentation confirming refugee status.

3. If available, copies of degree certificates.

4. Certified copies of academic transcripts.

5. For applicants pursuing a PhD, a proposal for your research.

6. If currently employed, the two most recent payslips.
