The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is now accepting applications from suitably qualified students for their ILRI PhD Graduate Fellowship. It is a fully-funded scholarship for all students.

About International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works for better lives through livestock in developing countries.

ILRI is co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, has 14 offices across Asia and Africa, employs some 700 staff, and has an annual operating budget of about USD80 million.

ILRI is a CGIAR research centre, a global research partnership for a food-secure future.

CGIAR science is dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources and ecosystem services.

Aim of ILRI PhD Graduate Fellowship

1. ILRI will offer a competitive stipend to cover living expenses, medical insurance cover, and meet research expenses and tuition fees.

2. The successful candidate will benefit from various capacity development opportunities available at ILRI and will be supervised jointly by an ILRI scientist and the university/academic supervisor.

In close collaboration with ILRI supervisors, the fellow will:

1. Develop a protocol for screening human and animal diseases, including a collection of blood and serum samples for zoonotic diseases.

2. Lead the sampling and process of the samples mentioned above for laboratory analysis.

3. Develop a risk assessment framework, focusing on the risk of zoonoses spillovers from the wildmeat value chain.

4. Develop a survey for risk factors, knowledge, attitude, and perception.

5. Conduct statistical analysis and develop a disease transmission model of animals/wildlife to humans.

6. Draft a thesis and at least three journal publications.

7. Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned by work supervisors.

Requirements for ILRI PhD Graduate Fellowship 

1. Bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, animal science, public health or other relevant areas and a master’s degree within a relevant field, e.g., epidemiology, ecology and data science.

2. Quantitative statistical analysis skills.

3. Experience in qualitative or quantitative risk analysis is an advantage.

4. Good skills in a programming/scripting language (e.g., R and STATA).

5. Experience with QGIS or ArcGIS.

7. Willingness to travel and to spend time in the field.

8. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team, with very good interpersonal and communication skills.

9. Excellent command of written and spoken English and Vietnamese.

10. Proven publication record (peer-reviewed).

11. Good working knowledge of MS Office packages.

3. CV including names and addresses (including telephone and email) of three referees who are knowledgeable about the candidate’s professional qualifications and work experience.

4. Copies of academic qualification certificates/transcripts.
