Michigan Competitive Scholarship Application Portal Updates

Michigan Competitive Scholarship: Are you out of cash to further your education in school? Well you don’t need to worry because there are  lots of way to pay your school bill, one of such way is through scholarship opportunity.

We have lots of them but today we’ll be focusing on the Michigan competitive scholarship.

The Michigan Competitive Scholarship is available to undergraduate students pursuing their first degree and is based on both financial need and merit. To be considered, a student must take the SAT (Class of 2017 and beyond) prior to entering college and achieve a qualifying score of at least 1200.

Eligibility

  • To qualify for this scholarship, you’ll need to offer your Social Security number to MI Student Aid by their senior year in high school.
  • Attain a qualifying SAT score of no less than 1200 prior to entering college.
  • Prior to the Class of 2017, eligible applicants must have achieved a qualifying ACT score of at least 23 (composite) or 90 (scaled score) prior to entering college.
  • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.
  • Show financial need.
  • Enroll at least half-time.
  • Be a Michigan occupant since July 1 of the previous calendar year. If a dependent student, parent must also be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or approved refugee.
  • Not be incarcerated.
  • For renewal, maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0.
  • For renewal, must meet institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.
  • Not be in default on a Federal/State student loan.

Application Process

Applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.

The first institution listed on the FAFSA will be considered the priority school. Students are responsible for notifying MI Student Aid of a change in their college choice. This can be done through the MiSSG Student Portal or by calling 1-888-447-2687.

Deadline

The Federal processors must obtain the FAFSA by March 1 each year.

Program Limits

Program Qualification ends when a student has gotten  a baccalaureate degree, after finishing the equal of ten semesters (or term equivalent), or when a student has been out of high school over ten years, whichever occurs first. Future awards are subject to available and approved funding.

Participating Institutions

Michigan community college, public university, or degree-granting, non-profit independent college (cannot be an institution whose primary purpose is to prepare students for ordination or appointment as a member of the clergy of a church, denomination, or religious sect).

Additional Information

The Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS) program is available to undergraduate students pursuing their first degrees at an approved Michigan postsecondary institution.

A list of eligible MI institutions can be found online at the link provided. Students must demonstrate both financial need and merit and eligible applicants must take the ACT and achieve a qualifying score prior to entering college.

Students attending Baker College or Davenport University should contact the college financial aid office to see if they are eligible and at what amount.

Renewal Requirements

For the award to be renewed, the student must continue to meet all of the eligibility requirements listed above and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. Future awards are subject to available and approved funding.

General Scholarships and Grants

Michigan’s state government supports a wide variety of general scholarships and grants designed to encourage and support the continuing education of its resident students. These programs are a combination of need-based and merit-based awards, and offer varying amounts of financial support.

Programs are subject to change without notice, and students in the Great Lakes State are encourage to monitor the government’s Student Financial Aid Website to stay informed as to the status of available grants and scholarships.

The following general grants and scholarships are currently being supported by the government of the great state of Michigan:

  • The Michigan Tuition Grant – The MTG was established in 1966 to provide residents of Michigan with increased access to higher education. The grant is available to undergraduate students who are attending, or preparing to enroll, at a non-profit state college or university. Award amounts vary, and are determined on the basis of financial need.
  • The Michigan Competitive Scholarship– The MCS is available to undergraduate students who are pursuing their first degree at a state supported college or university. To be eligible, students must meet the requisite level of financial need and academic merit. Applicants must achieve a qualifying ACT score to be eligible for any scholarship award.
  • The Tuition Incentive Program– This program was established in 1987 to encourage high school students to stay in school by providing tuition assistance for their first two years of college. Eligible students must apply to the program while attending high school. Tuition assistance is given to qualifying high school graduates who are pursuing an associate degree or approved certification at a state college, university or technical school. Award amounts vary, and are determined on the basis of financial need.
  • The GEAR UP Michigan Scholarship– The GEAR UP Scholarship Program is subsidized by the Federal government, and targets students within the three major urban public school systems within Michigan : Detroit, Flint and Muskegon. GEAR UP recipients must complete the six year GEAR UP Scholarship program, must be under 22 years of age, and must be enrolled in a participating state college or university.
  • The GEAR UP College Day Scholarship– This program is also subsidized by the Federal government, and is designed to encourage and support low income students to pursue a college education. GUCD recipients must complete a six year GUCD Scholarship program, must be high school graduates, and must be enrolled at least part time at a participating state college or university. Award amounts vary, and are determined on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

Grants for Students in Special Circumstances

In addition to the general grants and scholarships supported by the government of the great state of Michigan, two student specific grants are available to provide financial assistance to those in special circumstances. These programs target the dependent children of veterans and emergency response personnel.

The two state supported grants currently being offered to resident students in Michigan are:

The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant – The CVTG is designed to provide undergraduate tuition assistance to the natural or adoptive children of Michigan’s military veterans. Eligible students may receive up to four years of tuition assistance totaling no more than $11,200. Students must be full time residents of Michigan, and must be attending a state supported college or university.

The Police and Fire Fighter’s Survivors Tuition Grant – This program provides tuition waivers for the dependent children and spouses of Michigan police officers and firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty. To be eligible, students must be the spouse or the natural or adoptive child of a deceased police officer or firefighter. Awards are made on the basis of available funds.
