Differences Between NYSC Exclusion Letter and Exemption Letter

First and foremost, I will start by informing you all that the NYSC as a scheme has three types of certificates it issues to graduates/prospective corps members namely:

  • NYSC Certificate Of Discharge
  • Letter Of Exemption Certificate
  • NYSC Letter Of Exclusion Certificate

Literally, it means that as a graduate from any higher institution of learning ( be it University or Polytechnic ) either at home or abroad, you are qualified for one of these national certificates.

NYSC Letter Of Exemption Certificate

An exemption certificate is issued to someone who by law could not participate in the NYSC scheme despite the fact that such person attended a regular program in a University or Polytechnic program and graduated.

In accordance with the National Youth Service Corps Decree 1993 section 2 subsection (1) it is stipulated that;

  1. He/She is over the age of Thirty (30) years.
  2. He/She has served in the armed forces of the federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period of more than Nine-month; or
  3. He/She is a member of staff of any of the following:
  • The Nigerian Security Organization or
  • The State Security Service or
  • The National Intelligence Agency or
  • The Defence Intelligence Service.

4. He/She has been conferred with any National Honour.

These categories of persons are therefore exempted from service and issued with the Certificate of Exemption.

Eligibility:

Nigerian Graduates either home or oversea trained who have the stipulated qualification of (B.SC, B.A or HND) from approved or accredited Institution by (NUC, NTBE or NCCE) are eligible for Exemption Certificate however while foreign-trained graduates must submit their Certificates at the Mobilization Department for Evaluation.

NYSC Exclusion Letter

If you’re a part-time student of any University in Nigeria or abroad, you will not be called up for NYSC orientation course. You will not receive a certificate of exemption either, but instead, you will receive a letter of exclusion.

Also, be reminded that there three documents/awards/certificates NYSC does give out to Nigerian graduates. They are the Discharged certificate, exemption letter, and exclusion letter.

How to Apply for Exclusion Letter/Certificate

You will follow the same process as those who are meant to serve or exempted. Below is the quick look at the processes.

How to Apply for Exclusion Letter/Certificate

  1. Your school will send your data to NYSC for uploading it to the NYSC registration portal. This list of graduating students is called the senate list.
  2. You will go for online registration at the same time those who are meant to serve are also registering. You’re to fill exactly the same form (information) except that you won’t be asked to select 4 states of deployment.
  3. After completing the online registration you won’t be given any document (as that is not available for the exclusion candidates). Only those serving will be given the green card.
  4. You will return to print your exclusion letter when those who are to serve are printing their call-up letters.
  5. Note that as at the time of this post exclusion graduates are to print this letter online while served corps are given a discharged certificate by hands after service.

Difference Between Exclusion And Exemption Certificates
